Kansas City Police confirmed that a man found wandering late Sunday night has been safely reunited with his family. The incident, which occurred near 72nd and North Wyandotte streets, raised immediate concern after officers encountered the man barefoot and unable to communicate his identity.
He appeared to be in his early 60s and nonverbal. Dressed in a maroon hoodie and sweatpants, he had no identification and could not share any information about himself. Thanks to public assistance and swift action by law enforcement, his family was located and brought in to reunite with him.
A Growing Need for Autism Awareness and Safety Support

While police have not publicly confirmed a diagnosis, the man’s nonverbal status draws attention to the challenges faced by individuals with autism or other communication-related disabilities. Wandering behavior, or elopement, is common among individuals on the autism spectrum—especially when sensory overload, anxiety, or confusion are involved.
Families caring for loved ones with autism often face constant concern for their safety, especially in public spaces or unfamiliar environments. That’s why structured care, safety planning, and evidence-based behavioral therapy are crucial to ensuring independence while minimizing risk.
